Time: 1 to 4 pm

Alpaca Ontario presents a Fall Education Event!

When? Saturday November 12th from 1 – 4pm

Where? Brock University (campus map to be sent to registered participants)

Price? $15 for Alpaca Ontario members and $25 for non-members

Dr. Sherry Smith of the Dunnville Veterinary Clinic will be presenting a seminar and answering questions for both experienced and inexperienced alpaca breeders. Her talk is entitled:

In the beginning … there was Criation

This workshop will cover information about how to prepare for birthing (including pre-birth vaccinations, what should be in your “birthing kit”, etc.), what the birthing process itself will look like (and how long each stage should last), and how to care for dam and cria after birth. Dr. Sherry will discuss what is “normal” and when you need to call for veterinary assistance. She will also address special requirements for fall or winter births as compared to spring or summer births.

Dr. Sherry Smith

Dr. Sherry Smith grew up in rural Nova Scotia and developed a love of animals through her interactions on the family farm. She holds a BSc in Psychology & Neuroscience from Dalhousie University, an MSc in Entomology from Acadia University and a DVM from the Atlantic Veterinary College. She is a member of the Small Ruminant Veterinarians of Ontario, Ontario College of Veterinarians, Ontario Veterinary Medical Association and Ontario Association of Bovine Practitioners. In addition, she holds a special place in her heart for alpacas!

Price includes coffee, tea & nutritious afternoon snacks. Handouts will also be provided.

If you have sold alpacas to new breeders, please bring this event to their attention. They do not need to be members of Alpaca Ontario to attend.

Fall education events are also a great opportunity to network, to get together with fellow alpaca farmers, to share ideas and even to exchange finished alpaca products in preparation for the Christmas Sales Season. Hope to see you there!

Please register as soon as possible so that we can order enough snacks and handouts! If you have any questions, please contact Fiona Hunter (
