Ontario Show 2005
April 9 - 10, 2005

"Wow what a success"

show results
“Wow, what a fabulous weekend” generally sums up the
comments on the fourth annual Alpaca Ontario Show 2005 held at the
Orangeville Fairgrounds, Orangeville, Ontario, on the weekend of April
8th, 9th and 10th, 2005. Events flowed smoothly right from the informative
tips on showing alpacas and the very well attended Alpaca Ontario
annual general meeting Friday evening through to the third session
of seminars Sunday afternoon.
Mike Safley maintained a nice easy pace of judging through 21 classes
totalling 165 alpacas followed by five Best of Age and two Grand Champion
championship classes and two progeny group classes. Although the majority
of the 48 farms participating were from Ontario, alpacas came from
western and eastern provinces as well. A steady flow of spectators
enjoyed Mike’s informative explanations and browsing the featured
farm and vendor displays. Mike commented on the high quality of alpacas
and the depth of quality in the entered classes and identified 4th
and 5th place alpacas in classes where he felt the placing of 4th
and 5th were warranted. Even though ribbons were only awarded to 4th
place in classes with 10 or more entries the full show results (listed
separately) includes the official, signed-off placements by Mike.
The Orangeville facilities proved to be a great venue for the show.
As such the 2006 show will again be at Orangeville. Alpaca Ontario
was pleased to have guests of Peruvian decent attend and their inviting
the Consul General of Peru at the show and are thrilled by the prospect
of their participation in 2006. Mark your calendar now for April 7
– 9, 2006.
Workshops and seminars held on Sunday April 10th were attended
by approximately 80 alpaca enthusiasts. The education sessions included
a variety of concurrent topics suitable for different interests
and experience levels. Mike Safley shared his wealth of alpaca knowledge
on genetics, breeding and breed types. Cathy Merkley answered everything
you wanted to know about fibre while Heather Handy provided an insight
into the workings of a mini-mill.
Thank you to the many sponsors as well as the many volunteers who
made it possible to run this annual event. Alpaca Ontario is indeed
fortunate to be able to draw upon a professional and committed membership
who is willing to give of their time and talents.
As indicated above preliminary plans are already in place for the
2006 show with Amanda VandenBosch judging. Enhancements have already
been identified and the feasibility of new events will be explored.
The Alpaca Ontario Show 2006 will be a weekend you do not want to
miss.

ALPACA
ONTARIO
3rd Annual Alpaca Halter Show
A.M. Barr arena Kemptville College,
Kemptville Ontario.
May 1-2, 2004
Judge: Maggie Krieger
The third annual Alpaca Ontario Show and Workshops were
held on Saturday May 1st and Sunday May 2nd 2004 at Kemptville College,
Kemptville Ontario.
The full fleece halter show on Saturday May 1st nearly doubled
in size from the 2003 show. There were 130 Alpacas shown by 35 Canadian
breeders in 15 Huacaya color classes and 4 Suri colour classes. Grand
Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons were awarded in five colour and
gender divisions. The Supreme Champion Male and Supreme Champion female
were also selected. Full show results are listed separately.
Alpaca Ontario was priviliged to have Maggie Krieger as
judge and to receive her positive feedback: "It takes a lot of
hard work and cooperation from everyone to run such an event and to do
it with the efficiency you all did is a step up from just having it run.
It was a great job and I thank you for involving me in the event."
Thank you to the many Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors as
well as the many wolunteers who made it possible to run this annual event.
Alpaca Ontario especially appreciates the participation of Alpaca breeders
from both eastern and wesstern provinces. Classes containing Alpacas from
several Canadian provinces truly enable breeders to evaluate and verify
their breeding program with respect to the Canadian Alpaca industry.
Consistent with Alpaca Ontario's goal for continual growth
in the size and quality of this annual event, new events and other improvements
will be incorporated in the planning for 2005.

ALPACA ONTARIO SHOW
and Fiber Workshop
April 26 - 27 Carp
Fairgrounds, Carp
Judge Cathy Merkley
82 Alpacas were judged 50% on conformation and 50% on
fleece by Cathy Merkley, assisted by Trudy McCall as ring steward. 17
farms exhibited animals.
Congratulations to all winners.
The Show provided an opportunity for breeders and owners
to get together to create a feeling of community with a common bond and
a common goal to raise high quality canadian alpacas and to assess their
breeding program through friendly competition. The opening of the cash
bar in the evening and plenty of food provided relaxation and the possibility
to visit with fellow breeders and get to know each other.
The fibre workshop set the stage to learn more about breeding
for correct conformation and fine fibre, shearing and preparing the fleece
for processing.
